Le film Mank, produit par Netflix avec Gary Oldman dans le rôle du scénariste Herman J. Mankiewicz, part grand favori de la 93^e édition des Oscars avec dix nominations. Mank est notamment en lice dans les catégories du meilleur film, du meilleur acteur, du meilleur réalisateur et celle de la meilleure actrice dans un second rôle pour Amanda Seyfried.

Le long-métrage de David Fincher est talonné par six films six fois nommés : Nomadland de Chloé Zhao, The Father de Florian Zeller, Les Sept de Chicago d’Aaron Sorkin, Judas and the Black Messiah de Shaka King, Minari de Lee Isaac Chung et Sound of Metal de Darius Marder.

Souvent critiquée pour son manque de représentativité, l’Académie des Oscars a sélectionné cette année, deux femmes dans la catégorie qui récompense le ou la meilleure réalisatrice, Chloé Zhao et Emerald Fennell.
